Midwifery Model of Care

The Midwifery Model of Care is a holistic practice based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are a normal healthy human process. Throughout pregnancy a midwife monitors the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother, baby, and her family. The midwife provides individualized care with pregnancy and birthing information through prenatal visits; hands on support, monitoring, and assistance through labor and delivery; as well as postpartum care and support with breastfeeding.  The midwife is trained to work with normal healthy pregnancies, thus she is aware of identifying deviations from normal healthy pregnancies and will refer the mother to obstetrical care should complications arise. The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.

Pregnancy and birth can be a normal and empowering process in a family's life. Each family, each pregnancy, and each birth is unique, with the interests and well-being of mother and baby intertwined. Thus, I have great faith in the notion that families are to be primary in the role of decision-making for their care. Through prenatal and postpartum visits, I can offer up-to-date information while discussing options, allowing parents to make an informed decisions for their family. The ownership of decision-making can be empowering, which can actually influence a mother's sense of well being. This in turn can influence the birthing experience and the adjustment through your family's postpartum period. Ultimately, confidence grows through these empowering acts, which allows parents to trust in themselves and their beliefs as they evolve as guardians.
